"things people leave behond on trains"

For the final little assignment for my experimental typography class, we had to create an interesting 'map' using hand-drawn type. I found this very interesting list of things that people leave on trains and decided to make a map using the information I got. (The information was taken from Hamilton Advertiser in UK.)


Many of my classmates made very interesting maps as well, like Andrew's... :)


This was a really fun assignment. I'd love to make another one when I have time, maybe a map of "what kind of shoes do people wear in different areas of the city?" or something!

let's sing a song in type

For this week's assignment for out typography class, we had to illustrate song lyrics or poems using type. We were allowed to use photographs or create shapes/images using type, but no illustrations. I never had a chance to work with photographs in this type class, so really wanted incorporate my ideas for type with photos. Here are the ones I made.

Cereal Type

We had a fun quiz in our typography class. Our teacher gave us a list of cereals, and we had to spell out the name of one of them using hand-drawn letters in about 90 min. The letters must not resemble the existing brand. Since I don't eat cereals and did not grow up in the U.S., I did not know any of the brand names and their cereals... Lucky Charms was the only one that gave me some sort of inspiration, and here's what I did.

B for BlackLetter

I had to make a little poster (6"x10") for my typography class. I was assigned to create one for the letter B - for BlackLetter, and here's what I did. The B is hand-drawn :)

30-50 takes until i got i right (and lot's of gasoline!)."

letter patterns

The 3rd assignment for the experimental typography class was to create patterns using hand-drawn letters. I had to create one regular pattern and one random pattern. I was originally going to use my initials H&E only but ended up drawing more than two letters and using them all :)

The random pattern took me so long to create because I couldn't repeat anything.


I created two regular patterns! I really enjoyed drawing letters by hand, so this project was a lot of fun.

word flakes

I forgot to post the first assignment that we did in our experimental typography class. We made snowflakes made out of wintery words. It was a fun experiment :)

Letter Analogy

I just finished my assignment for my Experimental Typography class. We had to create a collage of letters found in magazines, newspapers, posters or any printed source. I had a hard time coming up with a good idea, but I think I'm happy with the result. Here it is.
The bird is made out of the letter K, Rs (head feathers), and O and decorative U (for the wing). I named him Koru. The tree is made out of the letters of the word tree. And the music note is made out of O, I, and J. They were all letters that I found in old magazines. I thought the letter k that I randomly found was very pretty, so I wanted to use it somehow. I'm glad it worked out.
