I made a restaurant website using Flash as a final project for our Flash class. I've come a long way, but I finished it finally. The logo is also designed by me. I chose "Marco's Supperclub" as my client for our "Corporate Identity" class. There's more pictures to come!

Candylicous!!

Here it is!!! My original font called "Candylicious" (final project) for my experimental typography class. We'll be having a show at the art gallery located inside of the main school building, and it's going to be a lot of fun.

This is the description that goes with Candylicious.

" My font is made out of candy sticks. I always thought
colorful candies would be fun to create something with,
and one day I stumbled upon a way to reshape candy
canes on the internet. So I decided to experiment to
see if I can make letters using candy sticks!
I placed the candy cane pieces onto a tray lined
with a wax paper and put the tray into a 220 degree
oven for 5 to 6 minutes. Then I shaped them right out
of the oven. They are movable for a minute or two (you
can put them back into the oven if you need to reshape
them again), and I used scissors to snip them to get the
right length. The challenge I faced was if you put the
candy in the oven too briefly, it breaks when you bend
it, and if it’s too long, it starts melting. Finding the right
timing to take out the candy from the oven was very
tricky. And although they are not burning hot to touch
when they come out of the oven, it did burn my finger
after working on this project for hours.
Candylicious is based on the typeface called
Roller RR. My favorite letters are m, w, and y because
the shapes are very fun. Some of the letters are fragile,
but Candylicious is a sweet/fun typeface to share with
people especially during holiday seasons.

"things people leave behond on trains"

For the final little assignment for my experimental typography class, we had to create an interesting 'map' using hand-drawn type. I found this very interesting list of things that people leave on trains and decided to make a map using the information I got. (The information was taken from Hamilton Advertiser in UK.)

Many of my classmates made very interesting maps as well, like Andrew's... :)

This was a really fun assignment. I'd love to make another one when I have time, maybe a map of "what kind of shoes do people wear in different areas of the city?" or something!

I had to create a "wordmark" for our counselor Dale - this was a small assignment that we had to do for one of our classes. Since he is a counselor, I used speech bubbles!

For this week's assignment for out typography class, we had to illustrate song lyrics or poems using type. We were allowed to use photographs or create shapes/images using type, but no illustrations. I never had a chance to work with photographs in this type class, so really wanted incorporate my ideas for type with photos. Here are the ones I made.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Saks Fifth Avenue always have interesting window displays - very artsy, innovative, and fun. I also love their campaigns and designs for their shopping bags. They are very memorable pieces.

Marian Bantjes's "Want it" campaign seemed to be a great success. She's amazing!

Cereal Type

We had a fun quiz in our typography class. Our teacher gave us a list of cereals, and we had to spell out the name of one of them using hand-drawn letters in about 90 min. The letters must not resemble the existing brand. Since I don't eat cereals and did not grow up in the U.S., I did not know any of the brand names and their cereals... Lucky Charms was the only one that gave me some sort of inspiration, and here's what I did.

For the week 6 assignment for Marc's poster class, we had to re-design an exciting poster in our neighborhood. I found this sad B&W poster about the chocolate factory tour on campus..

Going to chocolate factories is like magic. It needs COLOR and FUN style so attract people's attention, so here's what I did.

letter patterns

The 3rd assignment for the experimental typography class was to create patterns using hand-drawn letters. I had to create one regular pattern and one random pattern. I was originally going to use my initials H&E only but ended up drawing more than two letters and using them all :)

The random pattern took me so long to create because I couldn't repeat anything.

I created two regular patterns! I really enjoyed drawing letters by hand, so this project was a lot of fun.

Toni Morrison

We had to create a poster for Black Hisrtory for Marc's class, and I was assigned to create one about Toni Morrison. Since I am not that familiar with American literature, I didn't know who she was.. But I found her work quite interesting after I did my research.

Here's my poster.
I kind of wanted to stay away from putting a quote on a poster, but I really had to include this one - "If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it." - Toni Morrison. That's exactly what she did!

monograms

I had to create a monogram for the photographer [Matthew Malcham] who I worked with the last quarter for my blue cheese ad. He likes simple, clean, and modern style, so this is what I came up with.
He liked the very top one the best but also liked the frames that I used for the second one. So I made a slight change - this is the final piece.

Matthew told me that he likes it a lot, so that was a happy momet :) I'm glad it worked out.
(I spent so much time looking at Ms in the past two weeks!)

si scott design

Si Scott Design (the website is under construction for a moment) has amazing type/design work. All the images shows in their slide show is very powerful, and I just found out that they are all HAND-DRAWN!
Very impressive and inspiring.

The book Cover Archive is a great place to visit to find excellent book cover designs and designers. I think pretty much all the books that I own came with boring dust jackets. I wish my books were wrapped around those fabulous design works..

Einstein Posters

For this week, we were given an Einstein's quote to work with for Marc's poster class. This is what I presented. I quickly came up with a concept but had a hard time visualizing it..

My classmates said that I should attach a pink marker to the side of the poster so that people can actually draw things on this. I love my classmates.

I actually liked the first version of my poster very much, so I would like to post it as well. It might be a fun idea to give these posters to zoologists or biologists who know so much about penguins!

Letter Analogy

I just finished my assignment for my Experimental Typography class. We had to create a collage of letters found in magazines, newspapers, posters or any printed source. I had a hard time coming up with a good idea, but I think I'm happy with the result. Here it is.
The bird is made out of the letter K, Rs (head feathers), and O and decorative U (for the wing). I named him Koru. The tree is made out of the letters of the word tree. And the music note is made out of O, I, and J. They were all letters that I found in old magazines. I thought the letter k that I randomly found was very pretty, so I wanted to use it somehow. I'm glad it worked out.

Bob Dylan Poster

Tuesday's class is Marc's poster class. We'll be producing one poster a week. For the first week, we were given a Bob Dylan's quote and told to create a poster for it. This is what I came up with.

The type is small and not really readable from far away, but my intention is to make people come up closer and find out what it says :)
